AMBSO was established by experienced Ugandan epidemiologists and clinical trialists as an indigenous, not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing research, public health service delivery, and capacity building. Its mission is to generate knowledge on HIV, infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases to improve health outcomes nationally and internationally.

AMBSO formed a strategic partnership with Uro Care Hospital to integrate clinical care, research, training, and public health services. Through collaboration with the Infectious Diseases Institute, the organization launched its first Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) program and introduced the AMBSO Population Health Surveillance (APHS) initiative, establishing a strong foundation for community-based health interventions.

Responding to emerging public health challenges, AMBSO broadened its programs to include Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and response using the SASA methodology, alongside comprehensive illicit drug prevention and rehabilitation initiatives. These programs reinforced the organization's commitment to addressing the social determinants of health through community engagement.

Building on its success in VMMC implementation, AMBSO received accreditation from the Uganda Ministry of Health to train healthcare providers in emergency resuscitation for Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision and Early Infant Male Circumcision. This milestone strengthened the organization's contribution to healthcare workforce development and quality service delivery.
