
BOOST-UP Study aims to evaluate the potential of maternal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination as a strategy to reduce the burden of RSV disease in Uganda. RSV is a major cause of respiratory illness among infants and young children, and maternal vaccination during pregnancy offers an opportunity to provide early protection to newborns through the transfer of maternal antibodies.
The study employs a mixed-methods approach to assess the potential impact of integrating routine maternal RSV vaccination into antenatal care (ANC) services in Uganda. In addition to quantifying the expected reduction in RSV-related disease burden, the study seeks to understand the perspectives of healthcare providers regarding maternal immunization and to identify barriers and facilitators to successful implementation.
The research will explore the acceptability, feasibility, and appropriateness of expanding maternal immunization programs and identify effective strategies for delivering maternal vaccines within the Ugandan healthcare system. Findings will help inform policy decisions and implementation plans for integrating maternal RSV vaccination into routine ANC services.
By generating evidence on implementation needs, healthcare system readiness, and potential public health impact, the BOOST-UP Study aims to support efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes and strengthen maternal immunization programs in Uganda.
