The EMERGE Study was a cross-sectional study nested within the AMBSO Population Health Surveillance (APHS) platform. The study was conducted to collect data on novel COVID-19-related EMERGE measures, contributing to the global Evidence-based Measures of Empowerment for Research on Gender Equity (EMERGE) Initiative.
The EMERGE Initiative focuses on improving the measurement of gender equality, empowerment, and social determinants of health through the development, validation, and standardization of survey tools and scales. Within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the study sought to generate evidence on how gender dynamics, empowerment, decision-making, access to resources, and social inequalities influenced individuals' experiences and well-being.
Using the APHS cohort infrastructure, the study collected data from community members to assess dimensions of gender equity and empowerment and their relationship with health and social outcomes during the COVID-19 period. The findings contribute to the validation of gender measurement tools and provide insights that can inform gender-responsive health policies, programs, and interventions.
The study also strengthens understanding of how gender-related factors affect resilience, vulnerability, and access to resources during public health emergencies, particularly in low- and middle-income country settings.
