Morbidity and mortality resulting from communicable and non-communicable diseases are major public health problems in majority of SSA Countries including Uganda. Monitoring the burden and different causes of morbidity and mortality is essential to enable proper planning for targeted cost efficient prevention, care and treatment interventions.
It is therefore critical that where possible, regular surveillance is conducted to provide the necessary data to inform design and implementation of affordable, effective and efficient interventions that can guide policy.
The proposed APHS activities will provide information on the proximate and distal determinants of health and specifically on trends in demographic, economic, social and behavioral characteristics, HIV, STIs, reproductive health, emerging diseases; NCDs such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stroke etc., NTDs, Genetic diseases as well as GBV, and other diseases in targeted districts.
Since human health is driven by many environmental, structural and social factors, we will also aim to characterize the environments these populations are in, including basic health indicators such as immunization rates, average literacy and education levels of members of the community, access to health and sexual and reproductive health services and other health systems information as well as access to clean water and food security.
Monitoring of trends in, communicable and non-communicable diseases, reproductive health and their determinants including demographic, social, behavioral, economic, and other public health outcomes
Provision of a platform for service delivery, linkage and referral and implementation science research to inform service delivery including clinical care
Building capacity and establishment of settings for learning for researchers, students and fellows.
Create and maintain an archive of interview data and biological samples
Provide a platform for conducting and nesting other future research studies
