Africa Medical and Behavioral Sciences Organization
Every great public health breakthrough starts as a small, unproven idea a hunch a researcher can't yet afford to test. The Africa Medical and Behavioral Sciences Organization (AMBSO) is stepping in to change that story for African science.
Since launching on August 1, 2026, AMBSO's Impact Research Initiative has been open for applications a new competitive grants program designed to identify and accelerate early-stage research and proof-of-concept projects with the potential to transform how Africa responds to its most pressing health challenges. Researchers still have time to apply, with the call for expressions of interest remaining open until October 2, 2026.
A Philosophy Built on Impact
AMBSO has spent years building trusted, population-level research infrastructure in Uganda from longitudinal cohort surveillance studies to vaccine and biomedical trials all in close partnership with government, communities, universities, and global collaborators. The Impact Research Initiative extends that legacy outward, opening AMBSO's expertise and resources to researchers, academic institutions, and community-based organizations who have bold ideas but need a first foothold to test them.
Rather than funding only large, established programs, the initiative deliberately backs the earliest, riskiest stage of the research pipeline pilot studies capable of generating the actionable evidence that later attracts larger investment and shapes real policy.
Where the Funding Will Go
The initiative casts a wide net across nine priority tracks, reflecting the breadth of Africa's health landscape:
Successful applicants can receive grants of up to USD 10,000 to cover direct research costs protocol development, ethical and regulatory approvals, data collection, community engagement, and technical support over an implementation period of up to 18 months.
Designed to Maximize Reach
A hallmark of the initiative is its emphasis on stretching impact as far as possible. Applicants are encouraged to request only what they truly need, allowing AMBSO to fund a larger number of promising ideas each cycle. The program also considers how projects can leverage AMBSO's own research infrastructure or attract co-funding, making every dollar work harder for African science.
Doctoral students, academic teams, and community-based organizations are all welcome to apply, provided their work is led by a qualified investigator and aligned with the initiative's public health mission.
How to Get Involved
Concept notes are being accepted on a rolling basis through AMBSO's online EOI portal, with the window closing on 18:00 EAT, October 2, 2026 giving researchers a short but meaningful runway to bring their ideas forward. Successful applicants will be notified by October 27, 2026, with funded projects beginning January 6, 2027.
