The collaboration between the Africa Medical and Behavioral Sciences Organization (AMBSO) and San Diego State University (SDSU) has been instrumental in advancing global health research. This partnership, spearheaded by Prof. Amanda Miller, focuses on addressing critical public health issues such as HIV, intimate partner violence, and mental health in low-resource settings. Prof. Miller, an Assistant Research Professor at SDSU, has been pivotal in this collaboration, leveraging her extensive experience in global health to drive impactful research projects in Uganda and other countries in Africa.
The collaboration has facilitated numerous initiatives, including research capacity building at AMBSO, mentorship for young investigators, and opportunities for doctoral and master’s students at SDSU to engage with AMBSO’s data for their theses and dissertations.
The roots of this collaboration trace back to Prof. Miller’s tenure at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). While at UCSD, she played a crucial role in establishing the initial partnership between AMBSO and UCSD’s School of Medicine.
This collaboration began in 2018, with Prof. Miller working alongside Prof. Jennifer Wagman, other key researchers to develop and implement research protocols that address the intersection of HIV, substance use and mental health.
Prof. Miller's transition to SDSU did not hinder the collaboration; instead it expanded the scope and depth of the partnership, allowing for continued joint research efforts and the development of tailored interventions to improve health outcomes in the AMBSO research communities and in Uganda at large.
