The research collaboration between the Africa Medical and Behavioral Sciences Organization (AMBSO) and Karolinska Institutet (KI) officially began on September 23, 2019, when KI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AMBSO. This partnership aims at combining high-quality research with capacity building, laying the groundwork for new projects, grants, and joint PhD student supervision. The key areas of collaboration include research on; HIV and other communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), mental health, illicit drug and alcohol, and gender-based violence.
Since its inception, the collaboration has developed key research projects on quality of life, mental health, substance use, GBV, and adolescent reproductive health. It has also created a social economic index for diverse settings and fostered knowledge exchange, benefiting both institutions and the scientific community.
Lead Collaborator
Prof. Anna Mia is a Clinical professor in infectious disease epidemiology focusing on HIV and leader for the Global and Sexual Health (GloSH) research group at the Department of Global Public Health, Karolinska Institutet (KI). She has over 20 years of experience of implementation research and managing large research project with multiple partners in Africa and Europe. She has also been involved in capacity building in Uganda through the Sida-supported PhD sandwich program between KI and Makerere University. Prof. Anna Mia was the KI lead in establishing the AMBSO-KI partnership through her long-term research relationship with the founders of AMBSO. She is currently a lead Investigator on several AMBSO Research Protocols.

Susanne Guidetti is a Professor and Occupational Therapist at Karolinska Institutet (KI), where she leads the HELD research group. Her research focuses on developing and evaluating complex interventions related to health promotion, prevention, education, and rehabilitation in occupational therapy. Susanne has a strong international profile, with collaborations both nationally and internationally, including ongoing projects in Sweden, Uganda, and Denmark.

Through their collaboration with the African Medical and Behavioral Science Organization (AMBSO), GloSH researchers have been involved in various projects, including those examining the prevalence of gender-based violence and its association with sexual and reproductive health.
